21、 and initiating a scan mode. Severalscan modes are possible: mem- ory channel scan (with lockoutofunde- sired channels), group scan (memory channels00to09, 10 to 19,etc.), and pro- grammable band scan (memory chan- nels 90 to 99 only). Eachofthe last ten memorychannels can be programmed with individ
22、ual high and low frequency scan limits. You can scan from 30.0 kHz t030.0MHz,ifdesired,and the mode and filter canbechanged during scan. The scan speed is front-panel adjustablefrom about 20 to 700 Hz/seccno. Taking a look at tne field marked P14, the buttonmarkedQUICKMEMOimme- diately catches your
23、attention. Actually. there are five stacked quick-memory channels. Each one storeseverything- receive/transmit frequencies, modes,rn- ters. AlP on/off, fine-tune orvott.meier selection, etc. etc. The memories are stacked in the sense that every time the M.INkey is depressed for a given trans- ceiver
24、 setup, the last entry goes into memory channel1,lhedata that was in 1 moves to 2,etc. and the data in 5 is losl. To recall a quickmemory,MRis de- pressed and the M. CHIVRO. CH control rotatedto thedesired channel number on the display. I suppose if you are fast enough and the nets are slow-going,it
25、 would be possibletoparticipate inalmost fivenetssimultaneously. 28、as a tunefunction. In the SSB mode it re- duces the poweroutput by roughly half to facilitate tuning a linear amplifier. 33、ve ortransmit VFO,and either canbe set to any frequency within the range of the T5-8505. Datacanbetrans- ferred from either VFOtoa conventional memory channel. Data hastobetrans- ferred fromamemorychanneltoa VFO to makethatmemorychannel tunable. That is,thats the way the radio operates when you rece
34、ive it! If procedure No. 16 in Table II is executed,surpriseofsur- prises,all thememorychannelsbecome tunable exceptforsome channels in the 90-99groupwhich have dual frequency data stored in them. If a recalled memory channel is within an amateurbard.itcan beused immediately for transmit pur- poses.
35、 Why in the world Kenwood didnt immediately make apparent that the ra- dio hasSO-plus tunable memories sort of mystifies me. TheDOWNand UPswitches function as a bandswitch and toggle through the various amateur bands unless the 1MHz switchisalso used. In that case, the fre- quencyincrements in 1 MHz
36、 steps. THe transceiverdoesreturntothe last fre- quency setupused on a given band even 30CQJune1991 though VFOAor Bmight be retuned when switching to another band. FieldPllshows the frequency/meterl annunciator displays.The display looks a bit crowded, but in fact,itisoutteclear, sinceonly afewdispl
37、aysare active atone time and multiple colors are used. Test Results Idid some benchcheckson the TS-850S, but not really extensive ones,since much ofthecircuitryin the T5-8SOScomes fromother Kenwood transceivers and I didnt expectanysurprises.There werent any, as confirmed by later operating experien
38、ces. The mundane specifications such as those forpower output, spurious re- sponses, etc., were all easily met. The front end is not noise limited, and the dy- namic range slightly exceeds 112dBus- ing the unity gainAF preamplifier (AlP on)! Itsa good, stiff front end with strong signal-handling cap
39、abilities such that the weak onescanbepulled out easilyevenin acrowded band.The auto- maticantenna tuner isonlyrated to han- dle SWAs of up to 2.5:1, but I found it could easily handle SWRsofup to 5:1if the reactivepartofthe load is nottoo great (e.g., dontuse it with an end-fed wirewhich isVzwavele
40、ngth long on a given band).The automatic-tuning power level isset at 10 watts.so it is unlikelythat any harmwouldbedonetothe tunereven if you tried to testmatchan unknown load. On-The-Ai, Results Most amateurs arentreally too con- cerned abouta transceivers specifica- tions. They just want to getont
41、he air. Well, I think first understanding a bit about the makeup of a radio makes it all that morefun when you get it on the air. However, be that as it may, the T5-850S is a fun rig to operate. Since it uses the conventionalVFOAlBsystem, there is no confusion factor there.To usethe keypad forfreque
42、ncyentry to either selected VFO, presstheENTkey followed by the frequencynumbers, followed again by theENT. No confusion there. To get that frequency into memory, press M.IN, choose amemorychannel, and then press M,INagain. Again, no confusion, and on it goes. I found the frequency se- lection/memor
43、y system in the T5-8505 extremely straightforward to use. All the rest of the controls are clear and easyto use. I think CW buffs will find the fine- tuning rateof1kHz pertuning knob revo- lution combined with a sharp CW filter a joy to use. SSB received audio is crisp and clear using the internal s
44、peaker. The receive tonecontrol is of marginal use. When lis- tening to noise you can hear the effect of the control, butits far less dramatic when listeningtoastation,since so many stations on SSB tendtohave a bit of shaped audio.
