16、creased from 2 to 200,000 microvolts. 4 ) GENERAL PURPOSECOMMUNICATIONSRECEIVER I GENERAL DESCRIPTION TheSP,600,X is a 20 tube Radio Communications Receiverwithself contained power supply.TheJ suffix inthemodel number denotesthatthis receiver is made using components having characteristics which are
17、theequivalentofmilitary component specifications insofarasis practicable. Thereceiver is supplied in either a well ventilated steel, table model cabinet finished in dark greyto complementthelighter grey front panelorfor mount ing in a standard 19 inch relay rack. Theself contained power supply is de
18、signed for operation from a single phase, 50to60 cycle alternat ing currentpowersource.Thepower transformer primaryisprovidedwithtaps covering a line voltage range from 90to270 volts.Thepower consumption is 130 watts. Thereceiver is suitable for either headphoneor loudspeaker receptionofAMradio tele
19、phone,CW telegraph,AMMCWtelegraphsignalsandfor diversity applications. Thestandard model provides continuous coverage oyer a frequency range from 0.54 to 54.0 megacycles in six bands.Thelarge easily operated band change control knob,onthefront panel, selectsthedesired frequencybandand a band indicat
20、or visiblethrough a small front panel window indicatesthefrequency band in use.Thiscontrol also alignsthedial frequency indicatorwiththeproper dial scale. Inadditiontothefrequency scales,themain dial hasanarbitrary scale whichinconjunction withthe vernier dial provides continuous expanded scales ove
21、r each frequency band for extremely accurate logging andresetability. Thesingle tuning control is largeandofspecial design to permit maximum traverse speed as well as exceptional operating ease.Itcontrolsboththe main andvernier dials.Ananti,backlash gear train provides extremely close calibration ac
22、curacyandcompletely accurate resetability. A tuning lock provides positive locking actionwithoutaffectingthefrequency setting. Thetuning ratio fromthetuning control tothe main dial is 50to1andtheratio fromthevernier dial tothemain dial is 6 to1. Twostagesofradio frequency amplification are provided
23、on all bands. Single conversion is used for signal frequenciesupto 7.4meanddouble conversion, employing a crystal controlled oscillator, for signal frequencies above 7.4mc.Four stagesofIF amplifica tion, detectorandAVCrectifier, noise limiter and meter rectifier, beat frequency oscillator and buffer
24、 5 amplifier,IFoutput,AFamplifier andoutputpower stage are provided. Thefrequencycontrolunitprovidesforfixed channel crystal controlled operation on any six fre, quencies withintherange from .75 to 54mc.Front panel controls permit the selectionofthenormal high stability continuously variable tuningo
25、reitherofthe six selected fixed frequency signals. For crystal con trolled fixed channel operationitisonly necessary to setthedial tothesignal frequency, switch tothe crystal frequency desiredandtune withthedelta frequency control.These crystals are not supplied with the receiver,butmay be purchased
26、 on special order fromHAMMARLUNDMFG. CO. specifying the signal frequency for which each is to function. Thenoise limiter circuit effectively limits the inter ferencfrom ignition systemsorothersourcesofpulse type noise.Thelimiter switch permits optional use ofthelimiter. Theantenna input circuitisdes
27、igned for use with a balanced line.Theinputimpedance is nominally 95ohms.Thereceiver may also be operated with a conventional single wire antenna. Theaudio output circuit is designed for a 600 ohm loadorline and is provided with a four terminal split winding for balanced load operation. Maximum powe
28、r outputisapproximately 2.0 watts.Theheadphone circuitwhenreferred toan8000 ohm load provides signals attenuated approximately15db belowthe600 ohm power output. Thesend receive switchdesensitiesthereceiver butleavesthepower ontoprovide for instant recep tion between transmission periods. Radiationis
29、negligibleandcomplies with require ments for shipboard operation and for multi,receiver installations. Frequency drift after a15minute warm. up period, ranges between .001 percent and.01percentoffre que1,1cydepending onthefrequency used.Thisisa very unusual degreeoffrequency stability for variable t
30、unedHFoscillators and closely approaches crystal stability. Theselectivity control provides three degrees of crystal and three degreesofnoncrystal selectivity ranging from sharp (.2 kc) to broad (13.0 kc).The crystal filter embodies the same circuit fzaturesthat have provedsoeffectiveanddesirable in
