12、erivedfromthecrystalfilterincor- poratedinthei-famplifierofthereceiver.There- ceiverfunctionalcircuitryismostlycontainedinsub- assemblies,eachofwhichmayberemovedforrepair orreplacement.Thereceiverisdesignedforfixed and/ormobileoperationalactivitiessuchasareen- counteredatenclosedbaseorfieldstations,

13、aboard ship,orwhenairborne.Suchactivitiesmaybesubject towiderangesintemperatureandhumiditysincethe receiverisadequatelyconditionedfortropicaluse.The receiverisfullyshieldedtokeepitsradiationcharac- teristicstoapossibleminimum. 1-5.Theradioreceiverissuitedtooperateinsingle ormult-receivertwo-wayopera

14、tionalactivities.Itis especiallysuitedforuseindual-receiverfrequency- shiftspacediversityreceivingsystems.Anyactivity requiresthatcertainauxiliarycomponentsbeassoci- atedwiththereceiver.Apartfromthephonesjack containedinthefrontpaneland-theh-f-ooutputcon- nectoronthefrequencycontrolunit,allthereceiv

15、er inter-connectingmeansarelocatedontherearapron. Therearapronalsocontainstwocartridgetypefuse holders,onefora1.6-amperefuseinserieswiththe powertransformerprimarywinding,andtheother forathree-eighthsamperefuseinserieswiththecenter tapofthepowertransformersecondaryplatewinding. Thefrontpaneloftherec

16、eivercontainsallthereceiver operatingcontrols.Allthereceiveradjustmentcon- trolsarelocatedontherearapron.Thecoiladjustable tuningcoresandtrimmer-capacitorsusedtoalignthe receiver,andtheadjustmentcontrolsontherearapron, maintaintheiralignmentandadjustmentsettingsfor longperiodsoftime.Throughtheuseofv

17、arioustypes ofsprings,allthereceiveradjustablefixedandmoving partsareprovidedwithpositivepositioningandoper- ation.Also,flatspringsareusedontherotaryturret subassemblytoprovideforelectricalgrounding.The receiverr-fcoils,r-fchokes,andallsolderedconnec- tionsarefungicidalvarnishedfortropicalization;al

18、so, allmetalpartsincontactconformtotheelectrochemi- calseriesofelementssothatcorrosioniskepttoa possibleminimum.Inviewofthefactthatallpossible precautionsaretakenatthefactorytoprovideeach receiverforuseinperfectcondition,thepreventive maintenanceandoverhaulperformedonthereceiver shouldbedonewiththel

33、rsonneltodeterminetheneedfortheimmediate repairofthereceiver;or,todecidethatthenatureof thereceiverabnormalityisinsignificantenoughtobe takencareofatalateroverhauldate. 6-3.INSPECTIONTECHNIQUE.Toprovideforthe properinspectionofeachradioreceiver,theinspector mustthoroughlyfamiliarizehimselfwiththerec

34、eiver withregardtoeachofthefollowingconsiderations. a.Determinefirstthenormalappearanceofthe radioreceiverbycarefullynotingtheappearanceof eachsubassemblyandpartandtheirassembledinter- relationshipasoutlinedinparagraphs4-1theu4-8 and8-1thru8-3.Untilsuchtimethatthenormal detailedappearanceofthereceiv

35、eriscommittedto memory,comparethereceiverpartbypartwitha receiverknowntobeintheconditioninwhichitleft thefactory.Carefullyobservethecolorandfinishof allparts,theirrelativeplacement,thedressingofeach electricalwire,thequalityofthecrimpingofeach solderedwire,theamountofsolderusedtomakea solderedjoint,

36、andthemannerandlocationofthose solderedjointsprovidingforelectricalground.Note thatallsolderedjoints,allrfcoil assemblies,andall r-fchokesaretropicalizedasevidencedbytheirbrown- ishfungicidalvarnishcoating.Notethattheeight nutsatthetwoescutcheonsonthefrontpanel,the12 nutsatthesix crystal socketsonth

37、efrequencycontrol unit,thebearingsetscrew(18,figure4-1),andeach 8 nutusedtomounteachpinoneachofthe24r-ftuner subassembliesiscoatedwithU.S.ArmySpecification 3-182ClearVarnish.Thevarnishisusedasanaidto secureeachnutineachinstancesincenottoomuch straincanbeusedtotighteneachassembly. b.Determinenextthem

38、annerinwhichthereceiver operatingcontrolsactivatethemechanicalmeansused toperformeachcontrolfunction.Getthefeelofeach controlandcommitittomemory.Notethatthetuning controlis flywheelbalancedandthatitis freetoturn evenwhenthetuninglockislocked.Notethatthe twoindicatorsforthemaindialandtheoneindicator

39、forthevernierdialallsimultaneouslyindicatezero dialindicationswhenthefour-gangvariableaircapaci- torisfullymeshed.Notethatthemovablemaindial frequencyindicatorpointerlocatesatthefrequency scaleonthemaindialcorrespondingtothefrequency bandindentedandwhosefrequencyrangeisthat shownonthedialvisiblethro

43、to6-9 whenindentediscontrolledthroughtheuseofsprings, cams,gears,ballbearings,orprecisebearingfitsto truedmachinedshafting. b.BURNING.Theoverheatingofthereceiveris indicatedwhenpartscomprisingitshowdiscoloration, blistering,bulging,orsmellburnt. c.LEAKAGE.Theevidenceofoilorinsulating compoundatthete

44、rminalsofsealedcontainerparts providetheearliestpossibleevidenceofreceiverleak- age.Theleakagemaybeevidenttooatpinholes and/orbreaksinthecontainerenclosedpartitself. d.CORROSION.Theevidenceofreceivercorrosion istheoxidation(rust)whichformsonsurfaces, screws,nuts,etc.,usuallywheredifferentmetalareas

45、areincontact. e.DUST,DIRT,ETC.Theneedforcleaningthe receiverisevaluatedbestbytheextenttowhichdust, dirt,etc.hasaccumulatedatelectrontubesocketter- minals,resistorboards,andothernottooeasily acces- siblesolderedjointsandcornersinthereceiver. f. LOOSENESS.Theneedfortighteninganysub- assemblyorpartcomp

46、risingthereceiverisevaluated byfeelingthesuspectedloosepartfortightness.In theinstanceofattachinghardwaresuchasnutsand/or screws,considertheassemblytightwhennomorethan a90degreeturnmaybetakenupintheattaching part.Makesuretoresealthosenutslistedabovein paragraph6-3wheneveroccasion arisestotightenany

47、oneofthem. 6-5.RECEIVERINSPECTION. 6-6.Apartfromthecarefulinspectionoftheradio receiverforphysicaldamageevidentbyobservation, thereceivercontrolsshouldallbetriedtorender assurancethattheyfunctionproperly.Dependenton theinspectionappraisalofthereceiveronreceiptfor overhaul,adecisionshouldbemadeastowh

48、etheror notthereceivershouldbeturnedontodetermine theelectricalconditionofcertainofitsfunctioning parts,beforedismantlinganddisassembly.Whenever thereceiveristurnedonforinspection,itshouldbe strippedsothatthereceiverchassisandpanelassem- blymaybeunderobservation.Theninspectthe receiverforthefollowin

49、gconditions: a.Checkther-fgainandtheaudiogaincontrols fornoisyoperation;ifso,replacethem. b.Switchtheselectivityswitchfrompositionto positionandnoteifthereceiverfaultissuchasto causearcingatanyoneoftheswitchcontacts.Thisis averyremotepossibilitybutinanycaseeachswitch contactshouldbeinspectedforevidenceofcharring ofthebakeliteswitchwafers;ifany,replacethe switch. c.Checkatalltubesocketsterminalsforpossible arcingandcharringbetweenterminals;ifany,replace thetubesocke
