1、BYGORDONELIOTWHITE SURPLUSis aliveand well in Ohio.Vhile urbandecayand redevelopmenthasdisplaced radio row in NewYorkandotherbig cities, the business seems to be flourishing in smaller towns such as Dayton.TheDaytonHarnvention, last spring, had a flea marketthat covered twoacres. Mostofthewares were
2、 surplus andbusiness was flourishing. Itis not only during aone-day hamfest that surplus salesdowell inDayton.Thatmedium- sized city supportsfoursurplus dealers, three of them full-time. andapparentlygrowing,andan- otheroperating part-time. We were welcomedparticularlywarmlyby DaytonElectronic Surpl
3、us, 1001East2nd Street. Chubby.the proprietor, helped me locate some surplus items he didnt have in stock at the time, and showed me some interesting parts for my Command Set collection. Like most of the new breed of surplus houses, the retail endof the busi- ness is heavily in components, rather th
4、an com- plete receivers. transmitters, etc. DaytonSurplus had a good supply. at low prices,ofthe Korean war-vintage grayCommand Sets. Mendelsons Electronics, a few blocks away. also specializes heavily in components. spread out in bins in a large warehouse. I did not find anyone in at Research Equip
5、- ment Co. 1731 Springfield St., and Mr. Littell. of Engineering Associates. wasoutoftown. Dayton is fueledofcourse by the big Wright- PattersonAirForceBase complex. With shipping becomingevermorecostly, I am finding the best surplus sources are close to the militarybases whichgeneratethematerial,ra
6、therthanin downtown, crime-ridden cities. I visited TaIlen Electronics. 300 Seventh St., Brooklyn. N.Y.,and found that the proprietor.TomAllen, was get- ting readytosell out and retire.Oneofhis problems was his location. in a NewYorkslum where small children extortquarters inprotec- tion moneyor tos
7、s rocks attheemployees. Thechange in the surplus market involves the urbanproblem,redevelopment.suchasthe VorldTradeCenterwhich displaced Radio Row in New York,andthe simple problemofage. Theproprietorswho went into surplus in its hey- dayin 1946, are a quarter-centuryolder now, and are thinkingofre
8、tiring.Atthe same time surplus has moved intoa classofover- special- ized equipmentsuch as computers andradar, 1502 Stonewall Rd.Alexandria,Va. 22302. which are notusable in their original configura- tion. The result is a new cropofsurplus dealers. specializing in components. neworpull-outs.or in ai

10、on Girl emergency liferufttransmitter.Thisset has been slandard equipment inemergency gear for nearly 30 years. buthas been superseded recently by solid- statetransceiversofgreaterrangeandless weight. so batchesoftheGibsonGirl(fromthe shape)arebeing sold now. I make no sugges- tions as to the useful
11、lnessofthis set. butithas attracted some interest. TheAN/CRT-3 is the latest versionofthe SCR-278. which was a British copy of theGer- manN.S. 2 Notsender,captured in the English Channel in 1941. Bendix Radio built the U.S. copy about the timeofPearlHarbor, so that downed airmen could crankout an au
12、tomatic distress signal. The CRT-3 putsouteither a 500kHz signal, that being one of the international distress fre- quencies, or on the 8364 kHzemergency chan- nel.(others include 121.5 and 243mHz).Earlier models of the Gibson Girl had a frequencyof 8220 kHz. Themechanismofthe set switches automatic
13、- ally from the 500kHz signal to 8364 kHz every 45 seconds. The lowerfrequency is 1000Hz tone-modulated; thehigherfrequency is c.w. Both arc keyed withS0S plus a long dash. Cranking the set is somethingofa chore. I always wondered how long a downed airman could keep it going as he becameweakerand we
