、rument. The MPM1000 is an accurate optical power meters that can be used for optical loss testing of fi bre optic cables. It has been pre-calibrated for absolute power levels with reference to 1mW (dBm) for 850nm, 1300nm and 1550nm laser wavelengths. The MPM1000 is accurate to 5% -23dBm (0.22dBs) an
、d has a wide dynamic range of +5dBm to 60dBm with a resolution of 0.1dBm. This instrument provides a more cost-effective testing solution than the more advanced MPM2000 and is geared towards multi-mode operation as it is supplied with the relevant multi-mode patch lead. However it can also be used w
、ith single-mode fi bre optic cables (hence the1550nm range) and corresponding single-mode patch leads are available in the Accessories. 5 1.0 User Controls and Display 1.1 ON / OFF Switch To turn the unit on, depress the ON/OFF switch. The unit defaults to auto-power-off, dBm and 850nm wavelength me
、asurement modes. To avoid accidentally discharging the battery when not in use, the meter will auto-power-off after 20 minutes. The ON/OFF switch and auto-power-off are disabled when the meter is selected to the dB REL mode, the meter will then stay on permanently until dB REL is de-selected. To tur
、n the unit off, depress the ON/OFF switch again. 1.2 Wavelength () Switch The lambda switch is used to select the desired wavelength measurement mode. Depressing the wavelength switch will change between the wavelength measurement modes, selection is indicated by the illumination of the 850, 1300 or
、 1550 LED. 1.3 dBm / dB REL Switch To select dB REL measurements, depress the dBm/dB REL switch. Selection is indicated by the illumination of the dB REL LED and the display will indicate 00.0 dBm if a stable source is attached. Relative loss measurements may now be performed referenced to the origi
、nal power level. To change back to dBm measurements, depress the dBm/dB REL switch again. The dB REL LED extinguishing and the dBm LED illuminating indicate selection. Direct dBm measurements may now be taken. If the display indicates the negative bar only, this indicates that the input signal level
、 is below -62dBm. To prevent accidental turning off of the instrument once a reference power level has been set, the ON/OFF button is disable in dB REL mode (see 1.1). 1.4 Low Battery (LCD) The Lo Batt indicator on the LCD indicates that the 6LR61 (PP3) battery requires replacing or recharging. 6 2.
、0 Operation This instrument can be used for multiple applications including Optical Loss Testing, Optical Continuity Testing, Acceptance Testing of Fibre Transmitters and Received Power Testing of optical receivers. There are multiple techniques to achieve these types of tests, but a typical procedu
、re is detailed below: 2.1 Optical Loss Testing Take an optical light source and power meter with appropriate patch cords and mating adapter (uniter) to match the optical fi bre under test. Clean all the connectors and connect the light source via the fi rst patch cord, the uniter and the second patc
、h cord to the power meter so the attenuation of both cords can be eliminated. The link to be tested is then inserted between them so the optical loss associated only with this link can be found. This test is normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections between the patch cord and the fi

、ptical fi bre under test. Clean all the connections and insert the link to be tested between the light source and the power meter. Measure the output of the light source through the fi bre under test and check that it is above a pre- determined power level. This is a more simple go, no go test. 2.3
、Acceptance Testing of Fibre Transmitters Use a power meter with a suitable dynamic range for the transmitter under test and patch leads of a known optical loss. Clean all the connections and connect the power meter to the transmitter via the patch cord. Turn on the transmitter and allow the output t

The MPM1000 is supplied and confi gured for use with a 6LR61 (PP3) dry cell. A 12V DC charger (See Optional Accessories) can be used as a dual power source; this will not apply
