Afterturningtheinstrumentonforthefirsttime,keepaclose checkonthetemperatureofthecrystalovenasindicatedbythe thermometerinthefrontpanel.Whentheinstrumenthasbeenon about30minutes,thecrustalovenshouldremainautomaticallyata constanttemperature.Thisconditionwillbeindicatedby ashut- tingoffofthecry
7、stalovenindicatorlampfromtimetotime,and bythefactthatthethermometerwillreachasteadyreadingof 650c2oC. Howeverifthecrystalpilotlightstaysoncontinuously,or thethermometergoesup beyond 70degrees,themercurycolumnin eitherthethermostatorthethermometerhasprobablyseparatedin shipment.Turntheinstrumentoffim
8、mediatelyandproceedasfollows; 1.Removetheinstrumentfromthecabinetandremovethe crystalovenunitwhichplugsintotubesocketadjacenttothermo- meterwindow. 2.Disconnectthethermostatwiresfrolltheterminals(#3,Fig. 1).Removethethermostatclamp byunscrewingthetwoscrews(#4, Fig.1).Drawthethermostatoutoftheoven.(#
9、5,Fig.1) 3.Inspectthethermostatformercurycolumnseparationand minuteairbubblesinthemercurybulb. 4.Ifeitherairbubblesorseparationarepresent,placethe mercuryswitchbulbinicewateruntilmercuryoccupiesonlythe ,bulbcompartment.Taplightlytoremoveairbubblesormercury globulesleftincolumn . Thenplacethebulbinav
10、esselofwaterandheatuntilmercury completelyfillscolumnandasmallportionoftheenlargementat thetopofthecolumn.Then removethethermostat andvlatch the umercurydescenttoroomtemperature.Ifthereisnoseparationor Qbubblespresent,thethermostatmaynowbeputbackinservice.It maybenecessarytorepeattheaboveproceduremo

18、eatedintheirsockets.Ifanyshippingdamageisfound, followtheprocedureoutlinedintheClaimforDamageinShip- mentpageatthebackofthisinstructionbook. InitialInstallation- BeforeinstallingtheModellOOC,makesurethatthe tubesandrelayaresecureintheirsockets. Theinstrumentshouldbesituatedsothatthereis adequatevent
19、ilation.Lackofproperventilationmaycausethe ambienttemperatureintheinstrumenttorisehighenoughso thattheOV0nthermostatwilllosecontrol. ObservetheCautionregardingthecrystaloven,in thefrontofthisbook,beforeturningonthepower. Afterthepowerison,severalhourswillelapsebe- forethecrystaloventemperaturebecome
20、sconstant.Theinstru- mentshouldberuncontinuouslysothatthetemperatureofthe componentsreachesasteadystateandconstantoutputfrequen- cieswillbemaintained.Continuousoperationoftheinstrument willalsoimprovethestabilityofthecrystal. Lowcapacityshieldedwireshouldbeusedtodistrib- - 4 - utetheoutputvoltagesto

The Model 100Cconsistsofacrystal-controledoscil- latoroperatingat100KCwhichcontrolsthestabilityofall frequenciesgeneratedbytheinstrument.Thefrequenciesof 10KC,lKCand100cpsareproducedby1
28、0:1cascadedfrequency dividerswhicharedrivenbythe100KCprecisionoscillator. Eachdivideroperatesitsownisolatinaplifiersothatall sinewavesgeneratedbythoinstrumvntareindependentlyavail- albeforexternaluse. Aregulatedryowersupplydeliversallnecessaryvolt- agestotheinstrumentandmaintainsaconstantvoltagewhic
29、h contributestotheexcellentstabilityoftheinstrument. 100KCOscillatorCircuit- The 100KCoscillatorisamodifiedPiercecircuit.This circuitallowsthefrequencytobechangedlcpsbychanging thecapacityacrossthecrystal.Averylowtemperaturecoef- ficientcrystalheldataconstanttemperatITecontrolsthefre- quencytowithin
30、10partspermillionatnormalroomtemperature. FrequencyDividerCircuit- Thefrequencydividercircu11S composedof(seeFig. 2)tubesV2,V3andassociatedconponents.TubeV3istheactu- alfrequencydivider,operatingasacontrolledone-shotmulti- vibrator.Thetimeconstantsofthecircuitareadjustedsott thecircuitistriggeredbye

Assumingfora momentthattheoscillatorisnotoper- ating,theoperationofthecircuitcanbedescribedasfollows: InaquiescentstatetubeV3operatesinsuchalnnerthatthe plateisatahighervoltagethanthescreengridbutdrawsno current.Thisisexplainedbythefactthatthesuppressorgrid issufficient

Thisdividercircuitishighlystableandwilloperate forlongpe

Thesinusoidaloutputfromthedividerisobtained from atunedcircuitthatisconnectedtothescreengridof V3throughalargeisolatingresistor.Thissinusoidalwave isrelativelyharmonic-free,havinglessthan4%distortion. Theremainingdividercircuitsateconnectedincas- cadeandaredrivenfromthec
41、athodeoircuitofV3.Arectang- ularwaveispresentatthecatodeandthiswave,afterdif- ferentiation,triggersthefollowingdivider.Thoremaining dividercircuitsoperateinananersiillilartothocircuitof V3,themajordifferencebeingthatthetimeconstantsaread- justedtoaccomodatethelowerrepetitionratosinvolved.
