6、becarefullyinspected foranydamagereceivedintransit.Ifanyshippingdamageis found,followtheprocedureoutlinedintheClaimforDamagein Shipmentpageatthebackofthisinstructionbook OPERATION PowerMeasurements ConnectasignalgeneratororothersourceofpowertotheType Ninputconnectorontheendoftheinstrument.Mountafuse
7、, barretterorotherbolometerelementintheoutputconnectoras- sembly(seeparagraphonBolometerReplacement)andconnect aHewlett-PackardModel430CPowerMetertotheTypeBNCout- putconnector.Asubstitution bridgeorothermeansofmeasuring powermaybesubstitutedfortheModel430C.Tunethetwostubs untilamaximumreadingisobtai
8、nedonthepowermeter.Care mustbetakentogetatruemaximumasatsomefrequenciesitis possibletogetafalsemaximumbytuningeachstubindividually. Toinsuregettingatruematch,eitherstubmaybetunedslightly inonedirectionandthenintheotherwhiletheotherstubisrocked backandforth.Thiswillyieldthetruemaximum.Dialsarepro- vi
9、dedonthetuningknobssothatinproductiontesting,theapproxi- matestubpositionsforeachfrequencymaybenoted.Thisallows rapidtuningandinsuresusingthebestcombinationofstubsuscep- tancesatallfrequencies. Atthehigherfrequencies,itisusuallypossibletoobtainthesame combinationofsusceptancesatdifferentdialreadings
10、.Thisoc- cursbecausethestubsaremorethanone-halfwavelengthlong andthesusceptanceobtainableatonesettingisalsoobtainableat allpointswhichareamultipleofahalf-wavelengthawayfrom thatsetting.Occasionallyaslightdifferenceinthepowerread- ingsatthesedifferentdialsettingsmaybenoted.Forhighestac- curacy,thelow
11、estdialsettingattainableshouldbeused. Atfrequencieswheretheavailablestubtravelisnolimitation,it isalwayspossibletomatchagivenloadtothelinewithtwocom- binationsofstubsusceptances.Atsornefrequenciesthesuscep- tancesrequiredbyonecombinationcanbecomegreatenoughthat -1- stublosseswillcausethepowerreading
12、tobelessthanforthe othercombination.Thiseffectshowsupatthelowendofthe 475Brangeandrarelyamountstomorethanadb.Careshould betakentofindthepropercombinationforgreatestaccuracy. OperationasaDouble-StubTransformer WhentheModel475Bistobeusedasadoublestubtuner,itis necessarytoremovethebolometerandTypeBNCou
13、tputconnec- torandsubstituteaTypeNconnector.Changingtheseassemblies isdoneasfollows: 1.Unfastenthetwothumbscrewsandremovetheoutput connectorassembly. 2.Pulloutthesplit-diskbolometersocketandinstrument fuse.Thecapacitor,whichisalaminateddisk,will comeoutwiththeinstrumentfuse. 3.Unscrewthesplit-cupbol
14、ometersocketandremove fromtheholeinthecenterconductor. 4.RemovethefourPhillipsheadscrewsalongthebottom edgeofthecabinetandliftoutthebottomplate.Remove thecenterconductorDandthemaleinputconnectoras- semblyfromthebottomplate. 5.ScrewthecenterconductorDintotheholefromwhich thebolometersocketAwasremoved
15、. 6.Slipthemaleconnectorassemblyoverthecentercon- ductorandfasteninplacewiththetwothumbscrews. Thiscompletesthechangetoadoublestubtuner. 7.Whenreturningtheinstrumenttoitsoriginalcondition, reversetheaboveprocedure.Becarefultoassemble thecapacitordisktotheendofthestubsothatthe shouldersideofthediskfi
16、tsintotheendofthestub. Pushthefuseintothesplit-cupbolometersocketasfar asitwillgo. Theopeningsattheterminalendsofthestubsareidenticalsothat themaleconnectorassemblyorfemaleinputconnectorassembly maybeusedoneitherstub.Thisalsoappliestotheoutputcon- nectorassembly. BolometerReplacement TheModel475Biss
17、hippedfromthefactorywitha1/100ampere instrumentfuseinstalledinthebolometersocket.These1/100 ampereinstrumentfuses,suchasthe#MJB-1/100fusemanu- -2- oj:. -.I U1 to o o - I - facturedbytheBussmanMfg.Co.,St.Louis7,Mo.,haveproven tobefullyequivalentinperformancetobarrettersuptoabout 3500MCwhenusedinatuna
18、blemount.Abovethisfrequency, powerreadingswillbelowerwiththefusethanwiththebarretter. Theerroramountstolessthan.5dbat4000MC. WhenusingtheModel475BinconjunctionwiththeModel430C,it isnecessarythatthe1/100ampereinstrumentfusehavesuitable resistancecharacteristics.Afusecanbeusedonanyrangeof theModel430C
19、onwhichitispossibletosetthemetertozero. Mostfusesnotusableonthetoprangewillbeusableonsome lowerranges. SomeofthefusesfailingtozerowiththeModel430Cmaybe treatedtochangetheirresistancecharacteristicsandthusbring themwithintheoperatingrange.Thefuseshavingtoolowresis- tancearerunmomentarilyathigherthann
20、ormaltemperature. Thisresultsinapermanentincreaseinresistance.Thustreated, manyrefectedfusesmaybebroughtintotolerance. Acircuitforrapidlycheckingandtreating1/100amperefusesis shownbelow.
