14、connectedwhentherangeswitchisonthelowerranges.Eventuallyit-may notbepossibletozero-settheinstrumentonthetoprangeWIthsuchabarret- ter.Hencetoavoidthispossibility,ifitisnecessarytoconnectabarretter withtheinstrumentturnedon,itisadvisabletosettherangeswitchtothetop (10Mw)rangefirst.Fusesmaybesafelyconn
15、ectedatanytimeprovidedthe COEFFICIENTandRESISTANCEswitchesaresetproperly,whilethermistors canbeconnectedunderanyconditions: TheModel430Bisdesignedtooperatewithabolometerwhichhasa positivetemperaturecoefficient,suchasaSperrytype821barretteroraone- hundredthampereInstrumentfuse,orwithabolometerwhichha

Anybolometerissuitableprovidedthemeterindicationcanbebrought tozero.AwidevariationinDCbiasisprovidedoneveryrangeinorderto accommodatevariationsbetweenindividualbolometers.Becauseofthegreater sensitivityonthelowerranges,somebo
17、lometerswhichmaynotbeusableon -3- thetoprangeWlllbeusableonthelowerranges.Thesolecriterion1Swhether ornotthemetercanbezeroed.AllnormalbarrettersandHewlett-Packard selectedfusescanbeusedonallranges.However,thereisawidevariation amongthermistorsandsomemaynotbeusableonthetoprange.Nothermis- torswIllwor

19、esW1tchtothe10Mwrange. 4.TurnontheInstrumentandallowatleastfiveminuteswarm-up. 5.SettherangeswitchtothedesiredrangeandadjusttheFINEZERO. COARSEZEROconr01sforanapprox1matelyzerometerindication. 6.ApplyRFpower0thebolometer.AdjustthetumngdeVIceonthe bolometermount.ifany,formaximummeterindicatlOn. 7.Swi

23、Meterconsistsofaself-balancing bridgeoscillator,aDCbiascircuit,avolmetercircuit,andaregulatedpower supply(SeeFig.1). Theosc1llaormcludesthecircuiassociatedWIthV1,V2,andV3.The outputofthebndge1SfedintotheinpuofV1.V 1andV2amplifyhesignal, whileV3isacathodefollowercapableofsupplyingthenecessarypower.Th
24、e outputofV3isfedbacktothebndgeinphasew1ththeinputtoV1.sothathe systemoscillates.ThefrequencyofoscillatlonissetbythetuedCircmt(L1, C3)inthebridgeandisapproximately10.6Kc. Onearmofthebridge1Sthebolometer.anon-linearresistor.Itsresis- tanceisdeterminedbythetotalamountofpowerbeingdissipatedInit.Further

Inordertocahbratetheinstrumen,itisnecessary.0beabletosetthe aud.oleveltoadeftmevalueoneachrange.Thisisaccomplishedbysubstitu- tingDCpowerforal
27、lthepowerrequiredabovethegivenaudiolevel.Thezero- setcircuitprovIdesthebiasDCpowerandenablestheusertosettheproper audlOleveloneachrange.SufficientDCpowerisavailableoneachrangeto compensateford1fferencesbetweenIndividualbol.ometersandforvariationsin ambienttemperature. InmeasuringRFpower,thecircuitac
28、tionisthesameaswhenvaryIng theDCpower.ApphcationofRFpowertothebolometercausestheoscHator leveltodecreaseautomaticallysothatthechangeinaudiopowerisexactly equaltotheapphedRFpowerandthetotalpowerinthebolometerremainscon- stant.Avoltmetermeasuringthechangeinaudiovoltagecanthereforebecali- bratedinterms

ThevoltmeterC1rcu1tconsistsofV4andV5andafull-waverectifierand meter.SincetheadditionofRFpowertothebolometercausestheaudiovolt- agetodecrease,aspecialmetenngcircu1twasdevisedtomakethemeterread upscale.ADCcurrentflowshroughthemeterintheforwarddirechon,ofsuch magmtudeastocauseareadinghigh
