5、d,mustalso beprovided. Theabovementionedphototubeandlightsourcehavebeencombinedinto oneassemblyandmaybepurchasedfromtheHewlett-PackardCo.Thisacces- soryiscalledaModel506ATachometerHeadAssembly. ZeroMeterIndication-Themeterpointermaynotcoincidewiththezero scalemarkwhentheinstrumentisnotoperating.Them
6、eterpointeriscorrectly adjustedandtheadjustmentscrewsealedatthefactory. -5- CircuitDescription TheModel505A(or505B)ElectronicTachometerIndicatorconsistsof alimitingamplifier,anelectronicswitch,apulsecountercircuit,aconstant currentregulator,andapowersupply. Theincomingvoltageofunknownfrequencyisappl
7、iedtothegridofVI, thefirststageofthelimitingamplifier(tubesVI,V2,V3).TubesVIandV2 amplifyandflattenthepeaksoftheincomingvoltage.TubeV3isaphaseinverter. ThesquarewavesobtainedfromtheplatecircuitsoftubesV2andV3,op- posite.inphase,areappliedtothegridsoftubesV4andV5,whichcomprisethe electronicswitch. Th
8、espacecurrentforthetwoswitchingtubesisobtainedfromthecon- stantcurrentregulator.Theproperpairofpulse-countercapacitorsforthe desiredrangeisselectedbytheRANGEswitch,whichatthesametimeselects thepropershuntresistorforthemeter.WhenthesquarewavefromV2isin thepositivehalfofthecycle,switchingtubeV4isbiase
9、dtoconduct,andcurrent fromtheregulatorflowsthroughV4tochargeoneofthecapacitorsintheC9-C18 group.WhenthevoltageonthegridofV4becomesnegative,thewavefrom phaseinverterV3,appliedtothegridofV5,isinthepositivehalfofthecycle. SwitchingtubeV5inturnconducts,andcurrentfromtheregulatorflowsthrough V5tochargeon
10、eofthecapacitorsintheC 19-C28group.Thetimeconstantsof thetwoRCcombinations(loadresistorR33/capacitorfromC9-C18groupand loadresistorR32/capacitorfromC19-C28group)areequal.Theresistorand capacitorvaluesaresuchthat,atthehighestfrequencytobecounted,thecapaci- torwillbefullychargedbeforetheendofthehalfcy
11、cle.Theaccuratelycon- trolledpulsesfromthepairofcapacitorsareconvertedtounidirectionalpulses bycrystal-rectifiersCRl-CR4,andtheresultantcurrentflowsthroughthemeter. Themeterindicationisproportionaltothenumberofpulsesperunitoftimeand thereforetothefrequencyofthevoltageappliedtotheinputoftheinstrument
12、. ResistorsR34toR43areshunts,oneofwhich(selectedbytheRANGEswitch) isconnectedacrossthemetertoadjustthecurrentthroughthemetertothecor- 1ectvaluefortheselectedfrequencyrange. Tworesistors(R53andR56)areconnectedtocontactsoftheRECORDER jack,butonlyoneresistorisinthecircuitatanyonetime.Withthejackat norm
13、al,variableresistorR56isshunted,andresistorR53isconnectedintothe metercircuit.ResistorR53constitutesadummyloadapproximatelyequivalent totheloadarecorderpresents,andisinsertedinthecircuitwhennorecorder isconnectedtotheinstrument.WithaplugintheRECORDERjack,resistor R53isdisconnectedfromthecircuit,andr
14、esistorR56isinserted.Adjustment oftheModel505A(or505B)recordercircuittothatoftherecorderwithina 1400100ohmslimitismadebymeansofvariableresistor.R56. TheconstantcurrentregulatorconsistsoftubesV7,V8.TubeV8isa voltageregulatortubewhichmaintainsaconstantvoltageonthescreengridof tubeV7.Avoltagedivider(R4
15、8,R49,R50)isconnectedbetweenthescreen gridandground.Thevariableresistor(R49)inthisdividerisprovidedsothat thevoltageappliedtothegridofV7maybeadjustedtoproducethedesiredcon- stantcurrentfortheswitchingtubes.Thiscurrentismeasuredbyswitching themeter(Ml)acrossresistorR27intheplatecircuitoftubeV7. -6- J

CAUTION:Themetho

HumBalanceAdjustment(R55)- Theadjustmentforbalancingouttheunwantedpowerlinecurrentisas follows: 4.Againmeasurethelinefrequencyandcomparewiththepreviousline frequencymeasurement.Iftheyarenotthesame,readju

FrequencyCalibrationAdjustment- Theonlycalibrationadjustmentthatshouldbeperformedinthefieldis theadjustmentofthemetershuntresistors,R34toR43.If,anyofthecoupling capacitors,C9toC28,areaffectingthecalibration,theinstrumentshouldbere- turn

23、UTterminalsoftheinstrument.Thisvoltageshouldbeob- tainedfrom:isecondaryfrequencystandardorsomeothersourceofaccurate frequencies.Ifthemeterdoesnotindicateexactlyfullscale,thenadjustthe valueofshuntresistorR34bysubstitutinganotherresistororbyconnecting ahighresistanceinparallelwithR34. 3.Repeatstep2fo
24、r100200,andetc.usingacalibrationvoltagewhose frequencyisequaltothefullscalefrequencyofeachrange.Adjusttheshunt, resistorwhichcorrespondstotherangebeingcalibrated. AdjustmentofCurrentRegulator- Theprocedureforadjustingtheconstantcurrentregulatorcircuitisas follows: 1.Warmuptheinstrumentusing115V(or23
25、0V)linevoltage.Setthe USE-LINEFREQ.-CALIBRATEswitchtoCALIBRATE.AdjusttheCALIBRATE controlsothatthemeterindicatesexactly80onthe0to100scale. 2.Changethelinevoltageto105(or210V)voltsandnotethemeterindi- cation.Repeatat125(or250V)voltslinevoltage.Ifthemeterindicationdoes notchangemorethanl%offullscale(8
26、0.5to79.5),thentheregulatorcircuit isfunctioningsatisfactorily. 3.Ifthemeterindicationisnotwithinthespecifiedlimits,thenanew OD3tube(V8)and/oranewbLbtube(V7)shouldbetried.TheOD3tubeshould beagedbyoperatingitforeighthourswith150voltsappliedacrossitstermi- nals.Theeasiestwaytoagethetubeistoputitinitss
27、ocketintheinstrument andlettheinstrumentoperateforeighthours. Ifchangingtubesdoesnotrestoretheregulatorcircuittonormal,then additionaladjustmentswillbenecessary. 4.Withthelinevoltageat115(or230V)volts,settheUSE-LINEFREQ.- CALIBRATEswitchatCALIBRATE.SettheCALIBRATEcontroltoproducea meterindicationof8
28、0,thenchangetheUSE- -CALIBRATEswitchtoUSEand applya50,000cycles/sec.voltagetotheINPUTterminals.Notethemeter indication. 5.AdjustR6l(SeeResistorBoardDetailRB1,Fig.5)byconnectinga resistorinparallelwithRbIorbysubstitutinganewresistorofhighervalue, sothatthemeterdoesnotvarymorethen1%offullscalewhenthep
29、owerline voltageisvariedfrom105to125(or210to250V)volts. 6.WithoutchangingtheCALIBRATEcontrol,changetheRANGEswitch andinputfrequencyto1000cycles/sec.Notethemeterindicationwith115(or 230V)voltspowerlinevoltage.Changepowerlinevoltageto105and125(or 210and250V)voltsandnoteanyvariationsfromtheindicationob
30、tainedat115 (or230V)volts.Ifthevariationis1%orless,thecircuitiscorrectlyadjusted.
