ThisOption,availableforboththe5485Aandthe5487A InputPlug-Ins,enablesuseof the5480A VARIANCE OUTPUTsignaltocheckvalidityoftheaveragedsignal.The Optionmaybeorderedinstalledandtestedatthefactory,oritmaybeinstalledin thefield.Fieldinstallat

19、ionconsistsofreplacingtheSwitchingLogicBAssembly (05485-60010) with SwitchingLogicBAssembly(05485-60020); nowiringchanges arerequired. Astheinputwaveformisprocessed,itsaveragepatternisstoredinthe SignalAnalyzers memory.TheVarianceOptioncomparestheinputsignalagainstthispattern,andits tracerepresentsd

20、ifferencesbetweenthetwo.Thevariancetracecanbeusedtoidentify pointsintheaveragedwaveformwherethereisadditionalactivityotherthanthatadded simplybyrandomnoise.Ifthevariancetraceisastraightline,thentheaveraged waveformistheresultof asinglerepetitiveinputwhichwastime-lockedtothesync- .hronizingpulse(exce

21、ptforthespecialcasewheretheabsolutedeviationofthespurious inputfromtheaverageisthesameatallpointsonthewaveform). Iftheleadingortrailingedgeof apulseorsquarewaveisjittering(orappearstobe jitteringduetoajitteringtriggersignal),thevariancetracewillnotbeastraightline (thusindicatingthattherewassomething

22、inthesignalbesidesnoiseanddata).Ifthe inputsignalwaveformchanges,thevariancewillnotbeastraightline,butwillhavea shapeofitsown,reflectingthesignalchange.Thevariancetraceisalsousefulfor detectingwhenasignalisnotpresentduringtheentireanalysisinterval,.by showing thedifferencebetweenthestoredaveragedsig

23、nalandthemissinginputsignal.Allthat wouldhappentotheaveragedsignaltraceisthatitsamplitudewouldshrinkslightly (depending onnumberofsweepsthathadbeenaveraged). 2-2.OPERATION.
