6、isahigh qualityall solidstateaudioamplifier designedfor twochannelstereosoundreproductioninthe home,in studios,andin smalltomediumsized auditoriums.Itisintendedforusewithfull fre- quencyrange8to16ohmspeakersystemsand withsignal sources(phonographpickups,tape decks,AMandFMtunners)thatare themselves f

7、latenoughtorequirelittleornoequalization.In additiontothepoweramplifiers,theunitincludes phonopreamplifiers designedtooperatefromany ofseveral magneticphonocartridges. These pre- amplifiers providethenecessaryequalizationfor theRIAArecording characteristic.Additionalplug- inpreamplifierboardshavebee

8、ndesignedfor directmoving coilmicrophoneinputorfordirect inputfromlow-level,highimpedancesources. Addingthisfeaturewillrequirethattheuserbuild thepreamplifierboards,installandwireprinted circuitconnectorsinthedeck,drillfrontorrear panel holes as required,andmodifyselectorswitch wiring. Humanddistort

9、ionareinaudible.As a resultofcarefulattentiontofilteringandtolead routingonprintedcircuitboards,theresidual humis wellbelowthermalnoise (which itself has beenminimizedbyoptimuminputstage design). Theoutputstagesoftheamplifiers areoperated class-Btoreducestandbypowerdrainandare biasedandlocallydegene

10、ratedtoreducecrossover distortion.A largeamountofoverall negative feed- back, rangingfromover100dBloopgainatdcand lowfrequenciestoover50dBatthetopofthe audiorangefurtherreducesanyremaining har- monicandinter-modulationdistortion.Sincethe /-l-circuits aredirectcoupled, overload produces nolongtimecon

11、stanttransients;thepeaks are simply clippedandtheoriginal waveform resumes atitspropervalue immediately afterward.Be- causeofthelargeamountoffeedback, signals onlyafractionofa dB belowactualoverload typicallyshowatotaldistortionover75dB below thefundamental. Bridged-teenetworksinthe8-circuitsofthe a

12、mplifiers,andactive filters inthemixing and controlboard,enablethelow-end responsetobe maintaineddownto20Hzandtofalloffvery rapidlybelowtheaudible range. This preventsthe amplifierandloudspeakersfrombeing driven beyondtheirlinear excursionsbylowfrequency transientsarisingfromsuchsourcesaswarped reco

13、rdsorbreathblastsintomicrophones.Thehigh endresponse isreducedat18dBperoctave above 20kcbyanotherpairofactive filterstoprotect theamplifiers against overloadby,orrectification of,strongr-f signals. Thepoweramplifiers areprotectedagainst damage from accidental short-circuitsattheirout- puts.Momentary

14、shortswill havenoeffect, But sustainedshortsmayblowoneormoreofthepro- tective fuses.Inaddition,allpowersupplyoutputs areeithercurrentlimitedorfused sothatshorts fromtestprobeswill in general causenodamage. Finally, considerableeffortwasdevotedto reducing switching transients. A balanced build-up and

15、decayofpowersupplyvoltagesandcareful balancingoffunctiondropsminimizestheturn-on transients intheamplifiers. 34、orshielded wires areusedforeachchannel,thetwoinnershields mustbeinsulatedfromeachotherandfromthe outershieldaroundbothasshowninFigurel. Insomecartridges,theLOW sideofoneorboth channels isgroundedtothecasebyathinstrap atoneorbothLOW terminals.IFPRESENT, THESEGROUNDINGSTRAPS MUST BE RE- MOVEDBYPRYINGT

35、HEM OUT ANDOFF WITH ALARGENEEDLEORPICK.Theoverall shieldshouldbeconnectedtotheturntableframe atoneendandtotheamplifier chassisattheother endusingthebindingpostprovided.Afterthis is done,testthatbothchannels are isolatedfrom groundbeforeconnectingthemtotheamplifier. 42、0feet.For longerdistances, heavierconductorsare recom- mended.Ingeneralthed-cresistanceofthe cablesorcordsshouldnotexceed5%ofthe speakerimpedance. Connectiontotheamplifieroutputsis via thetwo-terminalpolarizedJonessocketsatthe rearoftheamplifier.Thecordsorcablesmustbe solderedtothematingplugs provid

43、ed,takingcare toavoidinternalshortcircuitsfromwirestrands orsolder bridges.Itisgoodpracticetoinsulate thewireandlugsfromeachotherwithelectrical tapeorheatshrinkabletubinginsidetheplug sleeveaftersoldering. D.SPEAKERPLACEMENT Theloudspeakersshouldbelocatedatthe endsofthebaseofanisosceles trianglewith

44、the listenerattheapex.Theapexangleofthis tri- angle, i.e.,theanglebetweenthelinesofsight tothetwospeakersshouldbeabout150to450, asshownin Figure 2.Goodsoundqualitywill thenbeheardupto450oneithersideofthe perpendicularbisectorofthelinebetweenthe speakers.
