SECTIONI GENERALDESCRIPTION 1-1DESCRIPTION TheModelAC-4ADecadeCounterisageneralpurpose,plug-in electroniccounterthatcountselectricalpulsesappliedtoitsin- putterminalandindicatesthenumberofthelastpulsereceived inaco

9、lumnofnumeralsfromAto9onthefrontpanel. TheAC-4Aproducesoneoutputpulseeachtimetheregistered countsstepsfrom9toa,i.e.,producesoneoutputpulsefor everyteninputpulses.Consequently,anydesiredcountstorage capacitycanbeobtainedbyconnectingtheunitsinseriesandby placingthemsidebysidesothatthefirstunitsprovide

10、theunits digit,thesecondunitprovidesthetensdigit,andsoon.The finalansweristhenreaddirectlyasanumberacrosstherowof counterunits. ThecountisindicatedonthepaneloftheAC-4Abyilluminating thecorrectnumeralinthenumbercolumnwithaneonlamp. Engravednumeralsandspecialreflectingsurfacesbehindthe neonlampsinsure

11、goodreadability. Asecondoutputsignal,theStaircaseoutput,isprovidedfor operatingcertaintypesofexternalindicatingdevices.Thisout- putsignalconsistsofnineequalstepsofvoltage,onestepfor eachcountindicatedinthenumbercolumn. TheAC-4Autilizesetchedcircuitswhichprovidegoodproduction uniformityandverylowcapa

12、citywiringandresultinaverystable, fastcountingunit.Theopen-frameconstructionlowersoperating temperaturesandsimplifiespartsinspectionandservicing. TheAC-4Arequires300voltsdcatapproximately15milliamperes and6.3voltsacat1.2amperesforoperation,neithervoltage requiringregulation.Theunitplugsintoastandard

13、octalsocket andissecuredbyasinglemountingscrewatthetopofthenumber column. TheAC-4Aisdirectlyreplaceablewithanyotherplug-in-counter unitusedinHewlett-PackardElectronicCounterinstruments, andinaddition,itisalsodirectlyinterchangeablewithmany similardecadecounterunitsofothermanufacturers. -1- SECTIONII

23、-58B generatesasuitabledrivingpulsefortheAC-4A,andhasa maximumsensitivityofO.2voltonanywaveform.Com- pletedetailsofthisplug-in-unitareavailablefromthe Hewlett-PackardCompany. -3- SECTIONIII THEORYOFOPERATION 3-1GENERAL TheAC-4ADecadeCounterplug-inunitconsistsoffourbi-stable multivibrators(binaries)a

24、ndabankof10neonlightednumerals onthefrontpanel.Asthebinariessensetheinputpulses,certain combinationsofvoltagesaresetupbetweenhalvesofthebinaries whichlighttheappropriateneonlampforeachpulse. Thestateofthefirstbinarydetermineswhetheranoddoreven numberedlampwillbelightedbyapplyingonenecessaryvoltage t

25、otheevenlamps,ortotheoddlamps.Theothervoltageisob- tainedasthedifference-voltageexistingacrosstwospecifichalves oftwodifferentbinaries.Assubsequentinputpulsesarereceived thedifference-voltagelightingthelampsprocedesfromonepair ofbinariestothenext,lightingsubsequentlamps. Thefourbinariesareconnectedi

26、ncascadesotheoutputfromthe firstisfedtotheinputofthesecond,andsoon.Eachbinaryis designedtorespondonlytonegative-goinginputpulses.Each binaryproducesalternatelypositiveandnegativeoutputpulsesfor aseriesofnegativeinputpulses.Sincethenextbinarysenses onlythenegativepulses,theeffectistodividebytwo. With

27、foursuchbinaries16inputpulseswouldberequiredtoobtain onenegativeoutputpulse(overalldivisionwouldbe16).However, bytheuseoftwofeedbackloops6extracountsareaddedwithin theunitsothatonly10inputpuIsesarerequiredtoobtainonenega- tiveoutputpuIsetomakethetotaldivision10.Thefeedbackcir- cuitsusedincountersare

28、nottobeconfusedwithfeedbackcircuits usedinamplifierdesign.Counterfeedbackcircuitsareusedonly toapplyapuIsefromoneofthebinariesinachaintoanotherin thesamechain.Ifthefeedbackpulseisofthecorrectpolarity,it willtriggerthebinary,producingthesameresultasadditional puIsesattheinput.Theactionofanindividualb

32、AninputsignalisappliedtoapointintheplateloadresistorsatRl whichiscommontotheplateloadsofbothsidesofthebinary.This pulselowerstheplatevoltageofbothtubes,butlowerstheplatevolt- ageofthenon-conductingtubebyalmostthefullvalueoftheinputpulse, whereastheplatevoltageoftheconductingtubeisonlyslightlyaffecte

33、d asitwasalreadyataverylowvalue.Consequently,thenegativeinput pulsecoupledfromtheplateofthenon-conductingtubetothegridofthe conductingtubewillbelarge;thenegativepulsecoupledfromtheplate oftheconductingtubetothegridofthenon-conductingtubewillbevery smallandisofnoimportance.Apositiveinputpulsefollowin

34、gthesame pathhasnoaffectuponthegridoftheconductingtubeandcausesno switchingaction. Thenegativeinputpulse,foraportionofitsduration,holdsbothsides ofthebinaryinastateofnon-conduction,andappliesahighnegative biastothegridofthepreviouslyconductingtube(essentiallyre- versingtherelativegridbiasforthetwoha

35、lvesofthebinary).Con- sequently,whentheinputpulseis.ended,thecapacitortothegridof thepreviouslynon-conductingstageandthehighplatevoltagetowhich itisnowconnectedcausethisgridtogopositiveveryquickly,before -5- theoppositecapacitorcanreturnfromitspotentialfarbeyondcutoff. Thebinaryhasthusreturnedtoasta

36、teoppositetothatwhichitheld priortoreceivingthenegativeinputpuIse. Astrong,sharpoutputpulseisobtainedfromoneplatecircuitand coupledtothenextbinary.TheoutputpuIseispositivewhentheout- puthalfofthebinaryisswitchedoutofconduction,andnegativewhen itisswitchedintoconduction.Theamplitudeoftheoutputpulses

37、fromthe2nd,3rdand4thbinariesintheAC-4Aareequal,andshould beapproximately82volts(from+53to+135),whiletheoutputfrom the1stbinaryisapproximately110volts,(from+62to+172). 3-3OPERATIONOFFOURCACADEDBINARIES Theoperationoffourbinariesconnectedincascadeandtheoperation oftheneonlightingcircuitsisdescribedint

38、hefollowingparagraphs withtheaidofthediagraminFigure2.Inthesediagrams,thewave- formsarethed-cpotentialattheoutputofeachbinary.Theactuating pulsethatisappliedtothenextbinaryconsistsoftheriseanddecay portionsofthewaveformshownduetobeingdifferentiatedbythe couplingcapacitor. DiagramAshowsthewaveformsob

39、tainedfromasystemoffourbi- narieswithnofeedback.Thetoprowrepresentsthepulsesapplied totheinput,andeachsubsequentrowistheoutputofasucceeding binary.Waveformsareorientedinrelationtothefrequencyapplied totheinput.Readingfromlefttoright,eachdown-goinglineisa negativepulsewhichcausesthenextbinarytoswitch

40、itsstate.Each up-goinglineinthewaveformisapositivepulseandiswithouteffect. Asshown,onepositiveoutputpulseisobtainedafter8inputpulses andonenegativeoutputpulseafter16inputpulses.Suchasystem wouldrequireacolumnof16numbersforthereadout,acomplexsys- terntoreadifmorethanonecounterisused. Amoreusefulindic

41、atingsystem,0through9,canbeobtainedwhen thedivisionratioofthesetoffourbinariesismadetobe10insteadof 16.Thereadoutcanthenbeadirectreadingdecimalnumberwhen morethanonecounterunitisused,onebesidetheother.Tomakethe systemproduceoneoutputpulseforeveryteninputpulses(insteadof 16)theextrasixpulsesareeffect
