Aftertheinstrumentisunpacked,theinstrumentshouldbecarefullyin- spectedfordamagerec

10、eivedintransit.Ifanyshippingdamageisfound,follow theprocedureoutlinedintheClaimforDamageinShipmentpageattheback ofthisinstructionbook. ControlsandTerminals ACPower-Thistoggleswitch,whichislocatedinthelowerleftcorner ofthecontrolpanel,controlsthepowersuppliedtotheinstrumentfromthe powerline.Whenthesw

11、itchisintheONposition,theredindicatorwillglow. FUSE-Thefuseholder,locatedonthebackofthechassis,containsa 1.5amperecartridgefuse.Thefusemaybereplacedbyunscrewingthefuse- holdercapandinsertinganewfuse. RANGE-Thisrotaryswitchinsertsvariousrangeresistorsinthefre- quencydeterminingcircuitoftheoscillator.

12、Thepositionofthisswitchindicates themultiplyingfactorforthefrequencydialcalibrationandwhichfrequencydial scaleshouldbeused. FrequencyDial-Thefrequencydialiscalibrateddirectlyincyclesper secondforthelowestXrange(outerscale)andinkilocyclespersecondfor theArange(innerscale). AMPL.-Thisvariableresistorc

13、ontrolstheamplitudeoftheoscillator voltageadmittedtotheamplifierandthereforetheoutputvoltageoftheinstru- ment. PowerCable-Thepowercableconsistsofthreeconductors.Twoof theseconductorscarrypowertotheinstrumentwhilethethirdconductor(green wire)i.sconnectedtotheinstrumentchassis.Thethirdwireprojectsfrom

14、the -2- 00 o o N I.n . o o o N o N cableneartheplugendofthecableandmaybeconnectedtoagroundwhenitis desirabletohaveagroundedinstrumentchassis. Operation- PlugthepowercabletotheModel202Dintoanominal115volts,50/60 cyclespowersourceandturnontheACpowerswitch.Theinstrumentwillbegin tooperateassoonasthetub

15、eshaveheated,butformaximumaccuracyawarm- upperiodofabout30minutesisnecessary. Setthefrequencydial(outerscale)andRANGEswitchsothattheuindi- cations,whenmultipliedtogether,equalsthedesiredfrequency.Forexample, ifitisdesiredtoselectanoutputfrequencyof800cyclespersecond,setthe frequencydialto80(outersca

16、le)andtheRANGEswitchtoX10. WhentheRANGEswitchissettoA,theinnerscaleisreaddirectlyin kilocyclespersecond. Connecttheoscillatoroutputbindingpoststotheequipmentbeingdriven andadjusttheAMPL.controlforthedesiredoutputvoltage. AlthoughtheratedloadfortheModel202Dis1000ohms(resistive), higherorlowerimpedanc

17、eloadsmaybeusedwithoutdamagetotheinstrument. Ahigherimpedanceloadwillresultinlesspoweroutputandalowerimpedance loadwillincreasethepercentageofdistortionintheoutputvoltage. Whentheinstrumentisturnedonthereisadirectcurrentvoltageof severalvoltsacrosstheoutputterminals.Thisvoltagesurgeisofshortdura- ti

18、on.Aftertheinstrumenthassettleddowntonormaloperation,thedirect currentvoltageacrosstheoutputterminalsisusuallylessthanonevolt. Astheoutputvoltageoftheaudiooscillatorisreduced,thepercentage ofhumvoltagewillincrease.Atthelowerlevelsthishumvoltagebecomes quitelarge,relativetothesinewaveoutputvoltage.Th

19、isundesirablecodi- tioncanberemediedbyoperatingtheaudiooscillatoratorslightlybelowrated outputandinsertingasuitableattenuatorbetweentheoscillatorandtheequip- mentbeingdrivenbytheoscillator.Thevoltagedividercircuitshownbelowis satisfactoryformostapplications. 20、EQUIPMENT BEING SUPPLIED Othervaluesofresistancemaybeusedtoobtaindifferentvoltagedivi- sions.Inallcasesjthesumofthedividerresistorsshouldequaltherated loadof1000ohms. CircuitDescription TheModel202DAudioOscillatorconsistsofanoscillatorsection,an amplifiersectionandapowersupply. Theoscillatorsection(

21、tubesVIandV2)isaresistance-tunedtypecir- cuit.Basically,thisoscillatorisatwo-stageresistance-coupledamplifier whichiscausedtooscillatebytheuseofapositivefeedbacknetwork.This networkisafrequency-selectiveresistance-capacitycombinationwhichcon- trolsthefrequencyofoscillation.Byusingavariabletuningcond

22、enserforthe capacityofthenetwork,itispossibletotunetheoscillatoroverawide10:1 range;andbyusingaswitchingarrangementtoselectdifferentvaluesofresis- tanceforthenetwork,severalrangesaregiventotheoscillator. Negativefeedbackisusedintheoscillatorsectioninorderto-minimize distortionandtoobtainaveryhighord

23、erofstability.Theamountofnegative feedbackisdeterminedbyaresistancenetwork,oneele-mentofwhichisnon- linear(the10-wattlampinthecathodeofVI).Thiselementcontrolstheamount offeedbackinaccordancewiththeamplitudeofoscillationandconsequently maintainstheamplitudeofoscillationsubstantiallyconstantoverawidef

24、requency range.Thenegativefeedbackalsokeepstheoperationofthesystemonthe linearportionofthetubecharacteristics.Itisnotablethatthelamphassuffi- cientthermalinertiasothatitoperateswellevenatlowfrequencies. Followingtheoscillatoristheoutputamplifiersectionwhichincludes tubesV3andV4.Negativefeedbackisuse

25、dinthisamplifierinordertomini- mizedistortionandtoprovideagoodfrequencyresponse. Thepowersupplysectionincludesaconventionalfull-waverectifierwith alow-passpifilterforremovingtheaccomponentsfromtherectifiedwave. Maintenance CoverandBottomPlateRemoval- Thecoverisremovedbyunscrewingtheeightscrewswhichf

26、astenthe covertothebackandtopoftheinstrument. 27、eoutputIfmaximumperformancefromtheinstru- mentisdesiredbecauseapoortubecancauseexceSSlVedistortionwithoutseem- inglyaffecingtheoperation.Thedistortionshouldbelessthan1%oftherated outputwithratedload.Distortionmayalsobecausedbyleakingcouplingcapa- cto_sandopnby-passcapacitors. ReplacementofLampR13- T

28、h,10-wattlampR13isoperatedataverylowlevelandshouldhavean almostin,fimtelife.Therefore,thelampshouldnotbechangedindiscriminately. However.shouldthelamprequirechanging,itisnecessarytochecktheacvolt- agefromthejunctionofR24andC14togroundwiththenewlampinthecircuit. Asmeaurdwit.ahigh-impedanceacvacuumtub

29、evoltmeter.thisvoltageshould bewithinth.rangeofapproximately27.5-28.5voltswhentheModel202Dis tu_ dto1000cps.hevoltageisnotwithinthisrange,itmaybecorrectedby adjustingRll. Ifthevoltagecannotbebroughtwithintherangefrom27.5 -28.5volts bymansofRH.thenewlampshouldberejectedinfavorofanother. IntemittentOu

Jumpyorintemitteatoutputaccompaniedbyflashingofthe10-watt oscillatorlamp(R13)ISareliablemdicationofashortintrimmercapacitorCl orinefourfront(nearestthepanel)sectionsofthemaintuningcapacitor.If thesesymptomoccur.searchoutandcleartheshortwithaweakairjeor othermeans.Donotbendhecapacitorplatesbec

31、ausebendingcapacitorplates willdestroytheLequencycalibratio. Ashortinthefourrearsectionsofthemaintuningcapacitororintrim- merC4willpreventthecircuitfromoscillating.Anysuchshortshouldbe clearedasexplainedabove. Distortion- Distortionmaybecausedbydefectivetubes.electricalleakageilithe coupHngcapacitor

FrequencyCalibraion- Ifachageoccursinthefrequencycalibration,theinstrumentshouldbe returnedtoheHewletPackardCo.forre-calibration. -5- TrimmerCapacitors Twotrimmercapacitorsareprovidedforthemaintun

Onecapacitorislocatedonthefrontofthetuningcapacitorassemblyandthe othercapacitorismountednexttothemaintuningcapacitorattherearedge ofthechassis.Thesetrimmersareadjustedatthefactoryanddonotrequire furtheradjustmentforthelifeoftheequipment.Ifthetrimmersareinadver- tentlymisadjusted.direc
