12、ECTION I GENERAL DESCRIPTION CAUTION Voltageswhicharedangeroustolife arepresentattheterminalsand withinthisinstrument. 1-1GENERAL TheModel7l2BPowerSupplyisaverystable sourceofcontinuouslyvariabledirectcur- rentforplateandbiascircuits.Italsopro- videsupto10amperes,6.3voltsalternat- ingcurrentforfilam

13、entcircuitsAtwo- rangevoltmeterandamilliammeter(high voltageonly)areprovidedtomeasurethe directcurrentoutput.Thispowersupplyis veryusefulasapowersourceforsmalltrans- mitters,oscillators,complexsystems,cer- taintypesofklystrons,andgenerallabora- toryuse. CAUTION TheACpowershouldbeturnedon foratleast3

14、0secondsbeforeswitch- ingonthehighvoltage.Thisallows theregulatorcircuitstoreachtheir properoperatingpointandavoids excessivevoltageatthehighvoltage terminals. 1-2 INSPECTION Thisinstrumentwasthoroughlytestedand inspectedbeforebeingshippedandisready forusewhenreceived. Aftertheinstrumentisunpacked,i

15、tshould beinspectedfordamagereceivedintransit. Ifanyshippingdamageisfound,followthe procedureoutlinedintheClaimforDamage inShipmentpageatthebackofthisinstruc- tionmanual. 1-1 SECTION II OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 2-1CONTROLS AND TERMINALS ACPOWER Thistoggleswitchcontrolsthepowersup- pliedtotheinstrument

16、fromthepowerline. WhentheswitchisintheONpositionthe redindicatorlampabovetheswitchwill glow. LINE4AMP Thefuseholder,locatedonthecontrolpanel, containsa 4amperecartridgefuseforthe protectionofthewholeinstrument.The fusemaybereplacedbyturningthefuse- holdercap,removingtheoldfuse,andin- sertinganewfuse

17、.Replacementfusesfor thisinstrumentmustbeoftheSlo-Blo typeasspecifiedintheReplaceableParts List. -300V1/16AMP Thefuseholder,locatedonthecontrolpanel, containsa1/16amperecartridgefusefor theprotectionofthe-300voltfixedbias supply.Thefusemaybereplacedbyturn- ingthefuseholdercap,removingtheold fuse,and

18、insertinganewfuse. NOTE Ifthisfuseblows,thepositive high-voltageregulatorcircuit willdroptheHVvoltagelevelto lessthan100volts,thusprotect- ingexternalequipmentorcir- cuitsagainstthepossibilityof damageduetolossofbias.When theopenfuseisreplaced,allcir- cuitsrestoretonormal. +HV1/2AMP Thefuseholder,lo

Thefusemaybereplacedbyturningthe fuseholdercap,removingtheoldfuse,and insertinganewfuse. 2-1 CAUTION Ifthisfuseblows,immediately turnofftheACPOWERswitch, andthenreplacethefuse.Con- tinuedoperationofthei

20、nstrument withthe+HV1/2AMPfuseopen willdamagethescreengridsof theseriesregulatortubes(V3, V4,V5,V6). HIGHVOLTAGE Thistoggleswitchturnsthehighvoltage directcurrentoffandon.Theswitchalso controlstheredindicatorlightaboveiton thecontrolpanel.Whentheswitchison, theindicatorlampglowsasawarningthat thehig

21、hvoltageisturnedon. 6.3VAC,10AMP Thetwofuseholders,locatedonthecontrol panel,eachcontaina 15amperecartridge fuseforprotectionofthe6.3voltACfila- mentsupplycircuit.Eachfusemaybere- placedbyturningitsfuseholdercap,re- movingtheoldfuse,andinsertinganew fuse.Replacementfusesmustbeofthe Slo-Blotypeasspec

27、llows: a.ConnectthepowercabletoaIlSVpower lineandturntheACPOWERswitchto ON. NOTE Thetriple-conductorpowercableis suppliedwiththenewNEMAapprov- edthree-prongplug.Thethirdcon- ductorprovidesachassisground. Anadaptermaybeobtainedtoper- mituseofthisplugwithtwo-conduc- torreceptacles. b.WiththeHIGHVOLTAG

SECTION III CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION 3-1GENERAL TheModel7l2BPowerSupplyfurnishestwo separateregulatedsupplies:apositivehigh voltageinthe0-500voltrangeandabias voltage.AblockdiagramoftheModel7l

31、2B isshowninFigure1 Voltagelevelofthehighvoltagesupplyisad- justedbymeansofapanelknob,HVCON- TROL,whichcontrolsthesettingofvariable autotransformerTl.Theautotransformer suppliesprimaryvoltagetothehighvoltage powertransformer,T2.Thecomparis.on voltageintheregulatorcircuitisadjustedby meansofvariabler

32、esistorR39whichisme- chanicallycoupledtotheautotransformer shaft.Thisarrangementmaintainstheregu- latorcircuitatitsoptimumoperatingpoint, regardlessofoutputvoltagelevel. Afterthehighvoltagehasbeenrectified(dual diodesVIandV2)andfiltered,itisapplied toagroupofseriesregulatortubes(pentodes V3-V6),toth

33、eDCmilliammeter,andthen tothehighvoltageoutputterminal,+HV.The conductionoftheseriesregulatortubesis controlledbyacascadedifferentialamplifier (dualtriodesV12andV13).Thedifferential amplifiercomparesasampleoftheoutput voltagewiththevoltagedevelopedacross voltagereferencetubeVII;anydifference between

34、thesevoltagesisamplifiedandthe conductivityoftheseriesregulatortubesis changedaccordingly. Thefixedbiasvoltage(-300V)supplycon- sistsofaconventionalpowertransformer, full-waverectifier(dualdiodeV7),andcapa- citor-inputfilter.Thevoltageisregulated bymeansofaseriesregulatortube(pentode VB),whichiscont

35、rolledinturnbyacascade differentialamplifier(dualtriodesV9and VlO).Operationoftheregulatorcircuitis similartothe+HVregulatordescribedabove. Asourceofvariablebiasvoltageisprovided bymeansofavoltagedivider(variablere- sistorR46)whichisconnectedbetweenthe -300V50MAterminalandtheCOMterminal. Thisvoltage

36、isregulatedagainstlinevoltage variationsonly.Sincetheinternalimpedance maybeashighas10,000ohms,depending uponthesettingofresistorR46,thevoltage willdependupontheactualloadcurrentbe- ingdrawn(5rna.max.).Thisvoltagecan bemeasuredbyturningtheMETERRANGE switchtothe-150V-BIASposition. 3-2HIGHVOLTAGE REGU

37、LATOR CIRCUIT Theregulatorcircuitissoarrangedthata slightvoltagechangeinthesampledoutput inthepositivedirectionwillresultinarela- tivelylargevoltageswinginthenegativedi- rectiononthegridsoftheseriesregulator tubes,andviceversa. Figure2showsthearrangementofdualtri- odesV13andV12which,connectedincasca

38、de, formatwostagedifferentialamplifier.In eachtube,cathodeconnectionsarecommon forthetwosections.Thusanyvariationin platecurrentinonesectionappearsacross thecathoderesistorcommontobothsections, andresultsinadifferencevoltageineachof theoutputcircuits. Inthefirststage,afixedbiassuppliedby voltagerefe

39、rencetubeVIIisappliedtoone gridofdualtriodeV13.Thebiasontheother gridofV13isaportionofthe+HVvoltage, sampledwithrespecttothe-300voltbiassup-. plythroughavoltagedivider.Anyvariation intheleveloftheoutputvoltageresultsin voltagechangesintheplatecircuitsofboth sectionsofV13,andcorrespondingchanges inth

40、ebiasesonthegridsofdualtriodeVIZin thenextstage. Forexample,ifthevoltageofthesampled outputswingsinthepositivedirection,in- creasedcurrentwillflowthroughtheright- handsectionofV13,whichwillraisethecath- odevoltageandlowertheright-handplate (pin1)voltage.Sincethebiasonthegridin theleft-handsectionofV
