2、en andknow that I am truly in resonance with themanyreadersofthis column who also remember thegoodolddays, In fact,anymention of olderequipment or tech- niques usually results in a good deal 01mail.That beingsaid. this month Iwould like to cater to those nostalgic readers among uswith a description

3、01a newamateurradiostationIputtogetherlastyear. Ihavealways been a homebrewer (at leastup to the popularuse01SSB), and my very first sta- tion,back in the 1950s,wasa2O-watt(input)plate- modulatedtransmitter using a 2E26in thefinal dri- ven by a couple of 6AG7s. The modulator, as I recall, used a cou

4、ple of 6V6s, a 12AX7, and an ARC-Smodulation transformer. The output was a pi-network (the coil wound on the ceramic form from the same cannibalized ARC-S), and the feel ofdippingorresonating the plate circuitand then slowly increasing the loading to the antenna 1 0 squeeze out every last drop of RF

5、 was something I never forgot. The receiver, by the way, was a Halhcrafters S38A, which I still have. Time went on, and by the 1960s the single 2E26 evolved into push-pull6146s (with6l 6sinthemod- ulator), but the pi-network and thedipand load technique remained. Eventually, in the 70s I became very

6、interested in 6 meters, and the fortu- nate acquisition of a few 4X150s from surplus sources (Canal Street and Cortland Street in New York City)allowed me10builda really powerfulTV channel2 and4interferencegenerator. Imanaged to work 40 states on 6, however, and prove to one and all that Drake filte

7、rs at the transmitter and on the twin-lead input totheTV set would indeedelim- inate interference. Those were the days! Then the transistor came on the scene big-time, and automatic tuning became the rage. This, of course,hascarriedintothe21stcentury,andIdont doCOmagazine believe thatanyonebuying ne

8、w equipment today even remotely thinks ofanysort of manual tune- up of a final. Even outboard antenna tuners are slowly becoming totally automatic, andthe manu- facturers are proud to letyouknow that fact. Well,thatmaybethe modernway,butthispast year I had the opportunity to purchase an older Kenwoo

9、d TS-530S transceiver (complete with the 6146s in the final and a 12BY7driver) and jumped at the chance. Although I was proud ofmyhome- brew equipment. I had always secretly coveted such top of the line equipment, but alas could never afford itbackthen.For about 25% of what it originally cost, Ihoug

10、h, I had the opportunity to travel back in time to the early 1980s, so I took it. The rig arrived spotless (along with an instruction manual that was in such new condition it seemed never to have been read) and appeared to have been manufactured yesterday. I immediately openedthecabinetandofcourseth

11、eRFcage(how could I resist?) to take a look at the 6146s. Yes, there they were, side by side ready to pump out RFandmadebyRCA toboot.Theglassenvelopes were spotless, and there was not even a layer of dust to be seen anywhere. Truly this rig was pre- viously owned by someone who at least under- stood

12、 and appreciated what he had. Nextcamethe acid test. With my3D-watt dummy load (made of z-watt carbon resistors as described inacolumnlastyear)connectedtotheS0-239UHF antenna connector Iturnedon the rig and set the bandswitch to14MHz. Immediately, even though no antennawas connected. Icould pickup a

13、couple 01stations while luningthrough the 20-meterband. Withbaitedbreath Iturned onthe heaterswitch(you newcomersmightnotknowwhal lhatswitchwaslor) and waited a minute or so for the tubes to warmup. Setting the rig to TUNE andTRANSMIT, I slowly increased the CARRIERcontrol while peaking the DRIVEcon

14、trol (as per the instructions in themanu- al), and was happy to easily get thecorrect reading on theAlC position 01the meter switch. Next was to switch to Ip (plate current) and of course dip the final. The dip was small but defi- nitely there. Now with an RF voltmeter connected acrossthedummyloadan

Plate current came right up to a couple of hundred milliamperes.the RFvoltmeterind

17、icat- edlifeacrossthe dummy load,andthe highvoltagepeaked ataround 800volts (definitely notsolid state). Thedipwas quite prominent. just like inthe olddays. The loading control also worked fine. justasIremembereditshould. and the dummy load began to heat up rather quickly. In fact, everything seemed

18、 to workas wellasitdidwhenthe rigwas new.Imust congratulate Kenwood tor the greatjob they did in thosedays. Forthose whoare interested,bythe way, the 61465 intheoutput stage pro- ducedasolid120watts (at 14.300MHz) whentuned and loadedinto a50-ohm resistiveload.A$40manual antenna tunercompleted thevi

19、ntage station andallowed abetterthan 1.3to 1match toa20-meterdipole on allbands from 20uptothetopof10. Needlesstosay. operationwas(and continuestobe) a pleasure. This is truly acombination of theold(threevacuumtubes)andthe new, since the rest of the rig is com- pletely solid state. Irelate this adve

20、nture to you fortwo reasons:Thefirst is to convey that the pleasureIgotfromoperatingthis antique rigwas(and is) wellworththe priceIpaid.notto mention thememo- ries it brought backofmyearlieryears inamateur radio.The second is that the higherquality 20-yearandolderequip- mentthat is still aroundhas a

21、gooddeal ofsteam left andeasily can compete withmore modern rigs. In fact, a friend ofmine with a $2000+ solid-stateD5P rigcannothearmuchmorethanmyT5 5305,althoughtobe fair.heisableto dealwith someformsofQRMbetter,but electronicsisdoing the job.notneces- sarilyoperatorskill.Themorethan $1700 in savi

The bottom line is thatanyonewith a limitedbudgetjust startingoutinor deeply involved inamateur radio canget really top valuelromequipment such as the T5-5305 without breaking the bank.
